Why a heat pump is the best choice.

This article will explain to you homeowners what you need to do for your properties and why a Heat Pump is a great solution to these upcoming changes.
What’s the new rule?
The new law states landlords must provide one or more fixed heaters that can directly heat the main living room to a maintained temperature of at least 18 degrees Celsius.
This follows a recommendation from the World Health Organisation (WHO).
When does it take effect?
All private rentals must comply within 90 days of any new or renewed tenancy after 1 July 2021, with all private rentals complying by 1 July 2024.
What are the heating options?
The heating option must be fixed and of at least 1.5kW in heating capacity.
Following the average living room sizes in New Zealand, your general options come down to heat pumps, wood burner, pellet burner or flued gas heater.
Electric heaters may be an option is much smaller rooms but due to high running costs are not a very efficient choice compared to alternatives.
Why choose a heat pump?
In 99% of situations, a heat pump will be the best choice for multiple reasons.
When sized correctly for the room being heated and when used properly heat pumps have the lowest running costs out of the remaining options.
Heat pumps produce heat instantly and have a lot of convenience with the control they offer for adjusting heat and the extra options they can provide like setting up automatic times to turn on. This allows you to always wake up to a warm home or to come home to a warm home on those extra cold winter nights.
The other big feature people tend to overlook is the use of cooling in summer. Getting enough heat through the home is the main goal with relation to the new law change but having an appliance that can achieve this and provide cooling in the other half of the year is an extra bonus.
Why sizing is important?
Heat pumps come in a variety of sizes and making sure you purchase one that is correct for the job is an essential part of having it run efficiently.
Too small of a heat pump will require it to run more frequently at full power which will increase running costs.
On the other hand, buying a heat pump that is too large will have higher initial costs which may be unnecessary for what you are trying to achieve.
